Off-Road Lifestyle: A Mothers Perspective

In January of 2017, our family of 5 discovered our new favorite pastime when we purchased 2 Polaris RZR’s, a 1000 2-seater, and a 900 4-seater. Never having driven one, I wasn’t confident I was going to like it and wasn’t sure my children would take an interest.

I got myself the 4-seater 900 and the girls, ages 2, 3, and 5 and were excited to pick out their own accessories and helmet. While driving it around my snowy 5-acre yard, I began to understand what I was undertaking, but the journey had just begun.

When opening weekend in April arrived we were ready to break in our RZR’s. We invited a friend to join who assisted with navigation. I bundled all 3 children into my RZR and took off on the trails. The nerves of not knowing if I’d be able to keep up with my husband were quickly overtaken by the enjoyment of the drive and the unknown of what was around the corner.

During our adventures, we were able to enjoy all aspects of Mother Nature. We headed out to a nearby damn to watch a waterfall and skipped a few stones along the way. The kids enjoyed the mixture of riding and sightseeing. While on the trails we drove alongside running deer, encountered a few wandering bears, and even had an eagle fly alongside us at eye level. It was a smoother ride than expected, fun, and also educational for the kids.

Through our first few adventures, we experienced colder weather and through summer, we had many adventures on hot days as well. We enjoyed the opportunity to cool off by driving through an ATV park or by parking and jumping in a local lake. The flexibility of the UTV allows a Mom like me to be carefree. The family can get muddy or dripping wet and jump back in the UTV and drive away. Cleaning up was simple and easy with a power washer and some soap once we returned home.

The kids and I loved looking for puddles and driving straight through them. The muddier we got, the more successful the trip! We visited the UTV park quite a bit over the summer. I even convinced my parents to join us. We often combined our UTV adventures with an overnight in our camper.

We became a UTV family who shared in the enjoyment while traveling around to different locations in the state of Wisconsin. We improved our outdoor skills and I was able to mentor other parents and grandparents on how to travel safely with kids in the UTV and what to expect. Neck braces and car seats are great ideas for kids to ensure their safety – in addition to a helmet. Also, wet wipes are a must! Along with items like spare clothes and gloves. Don’t forget a few snacks for the kids. Extra storage pouches in the UTV can really come in handy with kids. My youngest has allergies but I am able to safely bring her Epipen and inhaler along.

Driving with 2-seater 1000 units was not expected to be a challenge with my rookie driving abilities as I never expected to keep up. However, with the over 3000 miles I put on my UTV during the year, my skills improved dramatically, and driving through the trails around Wisconsin, I was able to not only keep up but lead the group at times. Unfortunately, on the straightaways, I was not as successful keeping up and began to truly understand the difference between the RZR 900 and the RZR 1000. In January of 2018, I traded in my RZR 900 4-seater for an RZR 1000 4-seater. Now the adventures can begin all over again!

Our family has bonded, experienced many great adventures, made memories, and has embraced being an off-road family.
